Kris Leverich

A Gryphon Quartermaster

Before the Mast: A Quartermaster's Journey

The Day of the Quartermaster Board of Review.

Kris Leverich is one of the three Quartermasters from the Gryphon, so far.  Growing up on the Gryphon in the last 1980's, he earned his Quartermaster in 1994, after serving as a successful Boatswain's Mate, a regatta winning Boatswain, then an extremely effective Junior Officer.

The late Commodore Joe Bjorkman described Kris Leverich as one of the best Quartermasters ever, with another Ship's skipper wanting to clone him.  Commodore Bjorkman said to one skipper, that there are those you test straight from the Sea Scout Manual, then those like Kris who you get out Knight's, Chapman Piloting, and Ashley's for a Board of Review.

After earning his Quartermaster and some time in college, Kris joined the United States Coast Guard.  Kris credits the opportunities and advancement he has enjoyed in America's oldest service to his time on the Sea Scout Ship Gryphon.  From two cruises on the USCG Eagle to high risk boardings, and traveling the world, Kris has had a very distinguished career.

Lessons from Shellback...

As Davy Shellback told an Able working on his Quartermaster long ago, "Along the course o'life ye must go; fair course or foul is up to yerself alone."

Kris is an example of what Shellback's fair course has to offer, and the opportunities that Sea Scouting and earning the Quartermaster Award can offer to a young person.

Red Skies and safe voyages, Mr. Leverich.
